Medicare is a federal health insurance program operated by the Social Security Administration for persons 65 years of age and older, disabled people, and people with permanent kidney failure.

Medicare is divided into 2 Parts:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance) - Helps pay for care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, rehabilitation or dialysis, and for home health and hospice care.
  • Part B (Medical Insurance) Helps pays doctor bills, certain outpatient hospital care, X-rays and laboratory tests, physical and occupational therapy, durable medical equipment and other medical items and services.

State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)

The State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) provides free help to New Jersey Medicare beneficiaries who have problems with, or questions about their health insurance. SHIP is a statewide program sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Human Services with major funding from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal Medicare agency.
